A Haiku, The Cold

I let my dog outside this morning and stood on the porch looking over the frozen yard. The sun was poking through onto some parts of the yard melting the frozen dew. The melting happened so quick. I walked down my driveway and back to my porch, and it was gone. It was almost as if the frozen dew was not supposed to be there, and the sun chased it away.

So I wrote this haiku encapsulating the battle between winter and spring.

Morning dew frozen
Cold winds carry brisk breezes
The sun scalds the cold

A Haiku, The Vibrant Lives

Keeping it going with the spring-themed haikus, here is another haiku that I put together this morning.

The daffodils dance
Basking animals frolic
The vibrant sun shines

A Poem, Inspirational Mentality

It’s been a little while since I’ve wrote an inspirational poem, so I wrote this last night.

Go ahead, continue to sit there
Thinking circles in your angry chair
Anger toils as you dwell and glare
Erase that lugubrious face you wear
What good does this hate give?
What does your festering madness solve?
Look upon thyself to forgive
Don’t wallow in pity; it is time to evolve
Your petulance will only lead to comeuppance
Rest your mind and do not break into aggression
Replace the hate with happiness in abundance
Do not allow yourself to be attracted to depression
Replace your anger with great deeds of beneficence
Replace your depression with outflowing benevolence

A Haiku, The Sun

So here is another spring haiku that I wrote this morning. It is in the 50’s today, and it’s easy to notice the impact the sun has on dormant life.

Dormant life renewed
The sun kisses God’s creatures
Exuberance reigns

A Haiku, The Windows

I’m sorry, I can’t help it. I have to keep the spring haiku train rolling, so here is another one I thought of this morning:

Music to our ears
Bountiful sounds of nature
Open windows bask

A Haiku, The Rain

I just thought of this haiku last night as I was staring out my office window. I could see lightning in the distance and a little rumble of thunder. Shortly after the lightning, it started to rain.

Taps on the rooftop
Lightning dances with vengeance
The clouds start to weep

A Poem, Déjà vu

I wrote this poem a little while ago and it touches on déjà vu with a sci-fi twist. We’ve all had the feeling like we’ve done it all before, but we can’t put our fingers on it.
The poor soul in the poem finds out why he has the feeling in a mind-bending way.

I’ve walked this narrow hall before I can sense it
But it is my first day here; how can it be
A frayed memory my mind continues to omit
I swear I’ve done this before, but it escapes me
I told my wife, now she’s concerned I’m crazy
I feel it again as my hand touches the wall
But again, the recollection remains hazy
Perhaps I’m a prisoner here in thrall
My suspicion is piqued; I saw notes from my boss
It read the number seven is deprecated
Next to the number was my name with a line across
My frayed memory perhaps knew this was fated
I broke into the office today and met number eight
My mind is bent, and my sanity slips
We had one glaring similarity as I now recognize my fate
Number eight looks just like me now my world unzips
They are chasing me through the factory, ready to deactivate me
I’m a servant, just a number to them, a flip of a switch, and I cease to be

A Poem, The Failed Deity

Dramatis Personae: An egotistical person that, by happenstance, stumbled across a tiny speck of a civilization to lord over.
Setting: Earth, parallel universe.

All praise me for your deity has come
Praise me until your jaws are broken
No mutiny under my thumb
Your fearsome God has spoken
I’ll rule with an iron fist
Put those able hands to labor
Or I’ll crush those who resist
Yes, that’s right, clutch thy neighbor
You are but specks, but I do see
I see you all conspiring
I demand you to serve me
I’m a fearsome God worth admiring
Do you feel the Earth itself tremble?
Even Earth fears me by falling in line
Erect a monument which I resemble
A beautiful tribute to me, my shrine
Why does the sun go black behind me?
The Earth trembles again as a figure blocks the sun
All praise me, your deity has arrived, drop to your knee
Tear down this blasphemous speck of a statute, or I shall shun
A God no more the failed deity crumbles in obedience
Now serving the giant deity, which eradicates with expedience

A Haiku, The Bats

I was working outside last summer, and nightfall was coming. Where I live, there are some large boulders on the side of the hills that pretty much serve as caves. While I was loading my wheelbarrow, I heard a collective sound of chirps, so I stopped to listen. It was a giant swarm of bats taking to the night sky. I always wanted to do something with that experience, so I figured I’d write a haiku about it. Here I go!

Evanescent day
Night shrouds the earth in silence
Bats claim the night sky

A Poem, The Accusing Sun

In an upcoming novel that I am currently writing, the protagonist wrote the journal entry below:

The sun shines bright, glaring at a person like an accusing eye, an eye that had its eyelid torn off to mitigate the temptation of blinking. It refuses to lose sight of us as we wallow in the mire.”

The featured picture on this blog is an advertisement I spun up a few months ago with the quote featured.

I found the quote interesting so I figured I’d add to it a bit and turn it into a poem.

The sun shines bright in the clear sky,
Why do you lord over us, staring and thinking?
Glaring at a person like an accusing eye
An eye that had its eyelid torn off to mitigate the temptation of blinking
You refuse to lose sight of us as we wallow in the mire
Our only relief from your accusing stare is the night
What secrets do you hold behind your gaze of ire?
Secrets enough to make a man tremble with fright
You punish us if we stare at you and scald our skin
We try to show our gratitude by basking in your shine
But you refuse to resile and still punish us like sin
Your loss would end humanity, so I shall not whine
You are an accusing sun bountiful of great power and protection
You help sustain life, such a great gift, so I must apologize for my abjection
