This morning I was looking out the front windows of my house, watching the deer pass through. It is always something interesting to watch. The doe looks around and remains ever vigilant when the fawns break out into playful fits. When their hooves hit the dirt road that borders my property, their interest changed. They were intrigued as they always are when they step onto the road. So I decided to write a haiku encapsulating both my perspective and the perspective of the deer.
Doe watches her young
Your road cuts through my forest
Fawns frolic freely
Let me know what you think!
Thanks for reading!

Wonder how they process the road? Do they know it’s a human contraption? Yes, they must be asking “your road cuts through my forest.” LOL.

I have always wondered that as well. I’ve watched them hit paved/blacktop road and immediately react and look around. They are definitely aware of it. I’d love to know what they are thinking though. Haha, that’s my thoughts on it. They’ve got to be thinking, “what is this passing through my forest? It doesn’t belong here.”

I miss seeing deer in Tucson.

Thanks, Michele! They are really something else. Where I previously lived we’d see maybe one a year. Where I live now it’s a daily activity. The one day I counted 12 standing in the road. The most I’ve seen were across the road, 21 deer in a field.

Wow! That would be amazing! They enjoyed the prickly pear cactus fruit around our Tucson house. Well, I assume they did, since they ate every flower. π

If they kept coming back they had to love them.π They really do enjoy the flowers. If you look off to the left in the featured image you can see how much they love the shrubs too. They trimmed all of them wherever they were able to reach. When I moved in a asked my neighbor about the interesting way of trimming and he said “oh that’s the deer!” Haha.

Yes, I believe so. They saved me from doing something crazy, like making countless jars of prickly pear jelly. π That is funny! Creative landscaping. π€£

Hahah! They knew! They were saying if we don’t eat these she’s going to turn them into jelly!π Yeah! It was funny I said to my neighbor, “usually people put these in to add some privacy so I’m curious why the bottom half is trimmed negating the whole point.” He got a good laugh and told me the deer pick at them constantly.

It’s pretty funny to see. After we joked about the hedges, my neighbor revealed to me that they are actually mine. They were planted by the previous home owner. What a twist! π²

That is funny! Guess that hedgey detail was kept private. π

I appreciate the opening background of this poem so it helped me understand the poem better.

Oh yes, the featured image on the post was the actual picture of the deer from this morning just before they got on the dirt road. π

Very nice, Travis! When we lived in Florida, our house backed up to a reserve and the deer would play in our backyard, and also walk down the middle of the street. It was a real treat to watch them.

That’s awesome! I love seeing them play around. It’s like clockwork for them, everyday they come over the hill around 5:30pm and then the fawns will run down the hill and chase each other. Meanwhile the doe is looking ahead walking calmly. So much fun to experience, I agree.

That’s why I love writing haikus. I love the challenge of conveying a message in such few words. Thank you so much for reading and the support! π€π

Absolutely! Haikus must be your specialty, you write them quite well. Perhaps I should challenge myself also by working on a haiku of my own. You are very welcome and happy writing to you!

I love writing both narrative poems and haikus. As of late, I’ve been gravitating towards the haikus because of the new challenge they bring. I think you should write one! Step out of the comfort zone and do it! π€π

I do a lot of narrative so yes, it would do me some good to switch things up a bit! I could use a change. Lol

That’s exactly why I got back into the haikus. I was primarily all narrative poems, so I ventured down the haiku path to switch things up a bit. So now I’ll work on some haikus and then share a narrative poem. It’s a great blend. I can’t wait to read your first haiku! π€π
