A Poem, Under The Bed

I wrote this creepy little poem months ago, I believe, around Halloween last year. We have many different fears when we are kids, such as “don’t go in the basement at night, don’t look in the closet, or don’t look under the bed.” This poem focuses on something lurking under the bed.

Don’t be afraid of the dark, my dear
Rest your weary head
There are many other things to fear
Like me lurking under your bed
I ascend from blackness, waiting for you
The darkness cloaks my presence
Your tender flesh I want to chew
You’ve committed no sin, so this is no penance
I would hide in the closet, but I want you close
I touch your bed to make sure you are there
So now you understand the position I chose
With a click-clack of my claw, I tease, look if you dare
Our eyes meet, you wear a delectable countenance
Pardon my drool, but I need sustenance

Let me know what you think!
Thanks for reading!

  1. Another homerun!
    “I ascend from blackness”… shivers!
This took me straight back to being a child, afraid of the dark.
I thought my stuffed animals would protect me if I lined them around my bed.
    I suppose they did!

    1. Muahaha! Good! That’s exactly what I was trying to revisit with it. Yes! I did the same with my stuffed animals. It’s interesting you mention your stuffed animals because I have verses that I left out of the final version that mentions them:
Anticipation sets in as my claws grip tight
It’s just your stuffed animal falling to the floor
I feel the bed shake, with a sniff, I smell fright
I got a taste of your fear, so now I want more

      1. You’re welcome! It was a fun one to put together. I flip flopped on two versions. I may do another post in the future including the alternate version.😁 Thank you for the compliment! I appreciate it! 😊
